About

Mission Statement

Tatler, the student-run news publication of St. Mary’s Episcopal School, is dedicated to sharing school, local and national news to the St. Mary’s Upper School with integrity, honesty and accountability. We work to deliver impartial information and well-informed opinion and to act as a free forum for the expression of ideas in the St. Mary’s community.

Code of Ethics

St. Mary’s Tatler abides by the NSPA Model Code of Ethics: Be fair, be responsible, be honest, be accurate, be independent, be accountable, and minimize harm. For a more detailed explanation of each of these elements, see the full code.

Violations of our Code of Ethics are grounds for consequences up to and including immediate dismissal from the Tatler staff.

Oversight

Tatler is a student-run publication. Decisions regarding content rest with the student editorial board under the advisement of Dr. Margaret Robertson, CJE.

Tatler strives to maintain editorial independence while operating under both prior review and prior restraint. Because administrators review each article before publication and have the power to prevent publication, editors aim to create positive relationships with administrators that foster trust and may lead to free-forum status in the future.

Funding

Tatler is funded by St. Mary’s Episcopal School but also fundraises, accepts donations and provides paid advertising to local businesses. Interested in donating to or advertising with us? Reach out to [email protected]

Letters to the Editor

Tatler welcomes letters to the editor from members of the St. Mary’s community in response to published stories or to the news of the day. Letters to the editor must be respectful, signed with an accurate full name and no longer than 300 words. Letters may be lightly edited for clarity.

Comments

Tatler welcomes comments on most published stories. All comments are reviewed before publication to the website for adherence to the following guidelines:

  • Comments must be on topic.
  • Comments must be respectful.
  • Comments may not use inappropriate language.
  • Comments may not be used to belittle or harass others.

Tips

Tatler welcomes tips regarding stories of interest to St. Mary’s students. Send tips and story ideas to [email protected].

Use of AI

St. Mary’s Tatler does not condone the use of generative AI for any published content. Any staffer found using AI to generate content for publication will be subject to review by the editorial board and may suffer consequences up to and including removal from Tatler staff. Use of AI for research or editing purposes is discouraged and, if used, must be disclosed in the shirttail. Exceptions are made for stories directly addressing the use of AI, which may use obviously labeled examples to illustrate points.

Style

In most matters of style, Tatler follows the Associated Press Stylebook.

Titles

Subjects of interviews and stories will be named with job titles in the case of adults (Head of School Albert Throckmorton, for example) or class year in the case of students (freshman Jill Smith, for instance) upon first reference. All subjects are referred to by their last name upon second reference, except where to do so would cause confusion.
