It’s In Our Nature

Why you’re (probably) addicted to social media
It's In Our Nature

We all know how it is. Just a quick check of social media apps for updates from friends or family leads to being on the platform for 20 minutes or more. This is exactly what social media apps want. Features such as streaks and scrolling and the use of notifications and personalization cause you to constantly be on or check the platforms, exploiting the human nature of addiction. Because social media apps’ revenue comes from advertisements, they are really selling their users’ attention. The more time you spend on their platforms, the more advertisements you’ll see, making the platforms more money. To social media apps, addiction is a money-making tool, whether or not it is healthy for their users. Through four main features, social media platforms have turned addiction into profit.
