St. Mary’s mock election resulted in a victory for Democrat Kamala Harris in the presidential race and Democrat Gloria Johnson in the Tennessee senate race. Harris won 75% of the vote and Johnson won 73% of the vote.
Upper school students had the opportunity to vote in the mock election hosted by the government club during ALAPP on Nov. 5. Two presidential candidates, Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Kamala Harris, and two Tennessee Senate candidates, Democrat Gloria Johnson and Republican Marsha Blackburn, were on this year’s mock ballot, which is set by the Tennessee Secretary of State.
76% of the entire student body cast a vote on Nov. 5.
After students voted, Tatler conducted an exit poll and 151 students responded.
Of the students that voted, 91% chose to vote in person instead of with an absentee ballot either before Nov. 5 or during the O period after the polls closed at 11:00 a.m.
Out of the 21 students who responded that they did not vote in Tatler’s exit poll, 48% said they did not have time to vote and 29% said they did not have their badge or other form of ID, which was a requirement for the mock vote reflecting Tennessee’s voter laws.
Overall, 91% of the students who responded that they cast a ballot said their experience was great, ranking it a 4 or 5 out of 5.
