Historic Clayborn Temple, located in downtown Memphis, was built in 1891 and was historically the city’s staging ground for the 1968 Sanitation Worker’s Strike.
When Grand Central Station closed, the large building was left empty until it was refurbished into a hotel. The hotel kept many parts of the original station including some neon signs.
The new and refurbished Tom Lee Park was completed in September of 2023 and now includes a new playground, walking paths and biking trails.
Big River Crossing takes you across the Mississippi to see some great views of the city, and you even get to cross the state line between Tennessee and Arkansas.
The Orpheum Theater, which presents touring Broadway shows, has been on the corner of Beale and Main for the past 47 years. As they enter, visitors are dazzled by the gold sparkly interior with a grand staircase leading to the balcony.
The Peanut Shoppe is a family-run business and has been run in Memphis since 1949. They sell all things from popcorn to candy and of course, peanuts.
Along Main Street, many works of art bring life to downtown Memphis.
This mural, located on Main Street was done by Memphis College of Art graduate, Michael Roy, also known as Birdcap. Though he grew up in Mississippi and currently travels the world, he feels deeply rooted in Memphis not only because of college, but because of the deep connections he has with his friends who live here. He has done numerous murals in the Memphis area including ones near Main Street, Eclectic Eye and Crosstown.
